ABSTRACT

In his latest film, The First Wave, Heineman tracks health-care workers and patients at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center, in Queens, New York City, NY, USA, from March–June, 2020. The intensive care unit (ICU) is on the verge of being overwhelmed. Staff members are stretched to the limits of endurance. “We are taught pattern recognition, and as of right now, there is no clear pattern”, points out Nathalie Dougé, an internist struggling to make sense of the new disease.
